Psalm 15 challenge

Something a little different today………….there is an incredible challenge found in Psalm 15 - these are 11 characteristics of a person who “dwells in God’s sanctuary” or “lives on God’s holy hill”.  One commentator says it could read “Who may be a guest in your tent?”.

It is very important to note that these are NOT pre-requisites for a person coming into a relationship with God - b/c it is by His grace and NOT our works - we ALL fall short - that’s why we need Jesus - to bring us back to this relationship with God.  So as a follower of Jesus (which again is through what He did for me, not what I can do for Him) - this seems to refer to “fellowship” - “communion” - “community” with God.  I see it as a picture of being with God - and knowing that He knows (b/c He does) everything going on in our life at that moment - and and having no shame, regret, or trying to hide something from him.  Here are the characteristics…….
  1. Walk is blameless.
  2. Does what is righteous.
  3. Speaks truth from the heart.
  4. NO slander on tongue.
  5. Does neighbor no wrong.
  6. Casts NO slur on fellowman.
  7. Despises a vile man.
  8. Honors those who fear the Lord.
  9. Keeps his oath - even when it hurts.
  10. Lends his money without usury (”exorbitant interest”)
  11. Does not accept a bribe against the innocent.
Then it says “He who does these things will never be shaken.”

I don’t know about you, but this challenges ME!  I have one word - “OUCH!” (especially when it says the word “NO” - I mean, can’t we say “not much”?).

We know - and God knows that NO ONE is “perfect” - and the truth is that God loves us even when we screw up BIG TIME!  But to see these characteristics of having a free and open community and “dwelling” and “fellowship” with God - puts a great challenge for us in our daily living - and we know that we can only accomplish this by God’s Spirit in us - if we will just let go and ALLOW it.

OUCH definitely came to mind…this explains why as humans we are so easily shaken…regardless of what it is that shakes us…

“He who doesn’t these things…” if we’re not doing those things, then we’re more easily shaken…

Enjoyed the post. It’s hard to find the balance between trying to live up to a standard under our own power and getting discouraged by never being able to be good enough, and seeing the goal and realizing the only way to truly even try to live it is under God’s grace.

It was good to see you guy’s at Ava’s party! Take care!
